Spread the goodness

If you invest in solar energy now, you will be guaranteeing solar income for the next 25 years.

Peace of mind

Once you have the solar PV installed in your building, that's where the real fun starts: your fresh investment can earn you money from Day One with virtually no further costs involved. You will be amazed how easy it is to feed the surplus solar energy that your PV system is producing to your local green energy grid - and get paid for it. On average, a family home or a small business can fully satisfy their energy needs and earn £1,000 a year. That's an added bonus that will make your investment pay off on average 3 years earlier!

Help others to go green

You will also be helping businesses and families, who are unable to invest in solar power, to go green through choosing the green energy from their local grid.

A source of fixed income

You can earn a fixed income for every kilowatt hour of electricity you generate and use in your property. And you can also earn an additional fixed income for every kilowatt hour of electricity you generate and sell back to the grid. Feed-in tariff is an index linked tax free rate per unit of electricity produced by your Solar PV system. This is a Government backed incentive scheme introduced on the 1st April 2010 to encourage more people generate their own clean electricity (Click here to view the Government white paper). It will pay you a tax free sum of 43.3p for each unit (kWh) of electricity generated, it's index-linked and guaranteed for 25 years. It's applicable to all systems under 4kW installed before 31st March 2012. Any surplus energy that is not used is automatically exported to the national grid for a minimum rate of 3.1p per kWh, although this can vary depending on your electricity supplier. There are no risks involved: Ofgem, Britain's national energy markets regulator, will administer the feed-in tariff scheme and energy suppliers will be responsible for payments to their customers.

How much will you make/save

To give you an idea, an average three-bedroom home will earn around £900 a year by generating it's own solar electricity - and that's on top of the likely reduction of £140 from the household electricity bill. When you need to use electricity at night (when it is dark you won't be able to generate enough electricity from solar technology), you can still buy your electricity from your utility company, but you will need to use much less than usual.

Quick solar tip

If you want to make the most of your solar PV installation - and to save even more on your electricity bills - try to become as energy efficient as you can; for example, run electrical appliances like your washing machine and dishwasher during the day and don't leave appliances on stand-by at night.

How we do it: survey, quotes and eligibility

Survey and quote

Dedicated customer service is at the heart of every project at Instalec. From the first contact to the completion day of your solar project, we will make sure that your needs and expectations are at the forefront of everything we do.

Our easy steps:

  • Solar PV Survey: one of our experienced electrical engineers will pop in to inspect the site and offer face to face consultation, free of charge and with no obligation. They know exactly what to look for, so it's quick, unintrusive and friendly.
  • Eligibility Analysis: we will discuss your building's eligibility, how much you will save, the duration of the project and what system would work best for your needs.
  • Instant Quote: Instalec's solar installers are keen to give you an instant quote following the survey. And we promise to beat any previous quote you've been given by another installer!

Is it for you?

To know if solar electricity is right for your home or business, there are several points to consider:
  • Do you have a sunny place to put it? You'll need a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees of south (south west and south east also work), and isn't overshadowed by trees or buildings. Still, if the surface is shadowed for parts of the day, your system will generate less energy.
  • Is your roof strong enough? Solar panels are not light and the roof must be strong enough to take their weight, especially if the panel is placed on top of existing tiles. Our solar PV installer will survey your roof and advise whether and what re-enforcement is needed.
  • Do you need planning permission? Good news: in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, you don't need planning permission for most home and business solar electricity systems, as long as they're below a certain size - but Instalec Eco will still check with your local planning officer, especially if your home is a listed building, or is in a conservation area or World Heritage Site.

Science of PV

Science of PV

In case you ever wondered how the solar energy is possible, we give you a sneak peak into the world of photovoltaic science.

The Basic

The panels produce direct current which is converted to alternating current by an inverter so it can be used by appliances in the home. These systems can either be connected to the national electricity grid, or connected to a battery.
Solar or photovoltaic (PV) cells, which as the name implies (photo meaning "light" and voltaic meaning "electricity"), directly convert sunlight into electricity at the atomic level. Some materials exhibit a property known as the photoelectric effect that causes them to absorb photons of light and release electrons. When these free electrons are captured, an electric current results that can be used as electricity.

The technical bit

Photovoltaic cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently used most commonly. Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline, polycrystalline and amorphus silicon and others. When light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely.
PV cells also have one or more electric field that acts to force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off for external use, say, to power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its built-in electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce. Cells require protection from the environment and are usually packaged tightly behind a glass sheet. Groups of these cells are connected electrically and packaged into a frame - a solar panel.

Inventor and other use

The photovoltaic effect was first observed by French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel in 1839. The first practical application of photovoltaics was to power satellites, but today the majority of PV installations are used for grid connected renewable power generation.

The green credentials of solar PV installation

Go green

It's all about going back to nature, the smart way. Solar PV installation is simple: it means generating green electricity from sunlight.

Why solar energy

As people become more and more aware of the bad impact of using fossil fuels, organizations, entrepreneurs and the government have started encouraging the use of alternative energy sources. This has led to a rapidly growing interest in solar power, and the volumes of information can seem a bit overwhelming.

Combating climate change is the most obvious green reason to invest in solar power. Instalec brings you the eco highlights of generating your own solar energy:

  • Your own cheap, clean and renewable power source generating free electricity all year long.
  • Only daylight is required, so will work all year long, even in the UK
  • Nothing goes to waste: surplus electricity sold back to national grid at 43.3p per/unit (see our Feed in Tariff page)
  • Panels are an investment for life: they are extremely long life and no maintenance is required, with an average life of 30 years plus.
  • Silent, clean, no fuss operation
  • Installation of solar panels is clean, quick and very little extra space is required in your house or business.
  • No planning permission is required to install solar photovoltaic systems (in most cases; it's unobtrusive to landscapes and virtually unnoticeable.
  • Reduce the impact of global warming with a cheap and green solar alternative.

Do your bit for the nature

Solar photovoltaic's offer huge potential to deliver renewable energy without generating carbon dioxide or other pollutants, and is in fact, one of the fastest growing green energy alternatives. Solar energy could be your way to do your bit for the future generations.

Stop rising bills - be your own energy company!

Stop rising bills

Let's talk about the bill. Twenty years ago in a average three bed house, you would have paid between £100 to £150 per year for your electricity. Comparing this to now (2011) the electricity bill for an average home is up to £750! That's up to seven times more! The bills are not set to decrease, and switching from one energy company to another doesn't seem to be helping in the long term.

Be in control

Solar power is the smart way to get in control of your energy budget for your home or your business: it is the choice to take real control on your electricity spending and even get paid to generate your own electricity. No need to worry about switch overs, direct debits and payment deadlines - having a solar PV energy system in your home or business means you will even earn your own money, as much as £35,000 in 25 years!

solar for all

Solar for all

At Instalec we believe that one day in the near future green energy will be the ONLY energy. After all, the benefits seem endless - why pay for something that you can get for free?

Save on CO2

Even if you are new to solar energy, you know the obvious benefits: the green savings can be considerable - around 1.2 tonnes of CO2 a year. A 2.7 kWp system can generate around 50% of a household's yearly electricity needs. If the system is eligible to receive the Feed In Tariff it could generate savings and income of around £1,170 per year.

Here are some of the benefits you maybe haven't thought about: Solar PV installation could reduce your electricity bill to zero depending on the size of system you purchase and the amount of electricity you use. Solar electricity system increases the value of your property

Once you decide to go ahead, there is more good news. Costs for installing a solar electricity system have come down quite a bit in recent years with InstalecEco average system (2.7kWp) costing around £10,000 (including VAT at 5%). Solar electricity systems can cost in the region of £5,000 to £6,000 per kWp installed, but costs per kWp should reduce as system size increases. It keeps getting better:
  1. the more solar electricity the system can generate, the more it costs but the more it would save;
  2. panels built into a roof are more expensive than those that sit on top but,
  3. if you need major roof repairs, PV tiles can offset the cost of roof tiles.
